Interim finance hiring is quietly rising in the West Midlands — here's what's actually driving it
Ask most West Midlands finance employers whether they're hiring right now, and the honest answer is often "sort of." Permanent headcount decisions are still cautious, but interim finance hiring has quietly been one of the busiest corners of this market all year. The latest national data backs that up.
What the data actually shows
KPMG and the REC's September 2026 Report on Jobs put temporary billings up for a fifth consecutive month nationally, expanding at the second-quickest pace in over three years. Permanent placements rose too — the first increase since late 2022. But overall demand for staff has now fallen for 34 months running. Two things are true at once: the market is genuinely turning, and employers still aren't ready to commit.
The West Midlands has been ahead of that curve for a while. The most recent Midlands-specific cut of the same report, from spring 2026, showed regional temporary billings rising for a tenth straight month, while permanent placements fell for a fourth month running — the sharpest regional drop of any English region monitored that month. Employers here weren't waiting for national confidence to firm up. Plenty had already worked out that interim cover let them keep moving without the commitment.
Why interim, and why now
It's not just maternity cover and sudden resignations anymore either. Employers across the sector are increasingly turning to interim finance professionals for ERP implementations, restructures, audit preparation and finance transformation projects — work with a defined start and end, where a business doesn't want a permanent seat filled for something that finishes in six months.
Scarcity is playing a part too. When permanent candidates are scarce and expensive, an experienced interim who can start in days rather than months starts to look like the lower-risk option, not the compromise.
What we're seeing in Coventry, Birmingham and Warwickshire
A fair few of the businesses we work with are holding off on permanent finance hires until the 28 October Budget lands, and using interim cover to bridge the gap rather than leaving a desk empty. We place interim and temporary staff across the whole transactional finance ladder — Accounts Assistant and Purchase Ledger Clerk roles covering short-term gaps, right up through Finance Manager and Financial Controller-level cover for senior projects. The demand isn't sitting in one tier. It's broad.
If you're weighing up interim against permanent for a specific vacancy rather than a general trend, our decision framework walks through it properly. Otherwise: no stress, no gimmicks — tell us what the gap actually is, and we'll tell you honestly whether interim solves it.
